m wrong” is a 66 minutes long, black and white movie directed by Lowell Sherman in the year 1933 in
USA. Starring in this movie are Mae West (Lady Lou) a famous actress of her age and Cary Grant (apt. Cummings) a very successful Broadway actor.
This is a comedy/romance film, about a woman called Lady Lou which is a singer and a New Yorker nightclub owner. The movie is about her, she is the main figure and Lady Lou was very popular, and extremely by men, she had more male friends then any other lady in the city. Unfortunately one of them is a vicious criminal who’s escaped and is on the way to see “his” girl, not realising she hasn’t exactly been faithful in his absence. Help is at hand in the form of young Captain Cummings a local temperance league leader though. The movie’s line “Why don’t you come up sometime and see me?” was voted as the #26 movie quote by the American Film Institute.
Mae West was a veteran of burlesque, vaudeville and the Broadway stage. In 1932 at the age of 39 she has done her first movie. `She Done Him Wrong’ was her second film and her first starring role in an adaptation of her smash Broadway hit `Diamond Lil’. She was the highest paid woman in
America by 1935. All those great quotes we’ve heard that are attributed to her were not only said by her, but written by her as well. This film is among her best. It is full of the bawdy double entendre that became her trademark. She was the queen of sexual innuendo and suggestive dialogue and many of her lines have become part of
Americana, like for example: “Is that a gun in your pocket or are you just glad to see me?” , “A hard man is good to find.” , “When women go wrong, men go right after them “ And of course, “Come up and see me sometime.”
This classic film is a piece of film history that shouldn’t be missed. I rated it a 10/10. It is among Mae West’s best moments. The web site IMDB.com highly recommends it.
